Food Truck Fridays!!!

My biggest attraction to food is the community it brings. People naturally gather around food. It’s a small part of our instinctual ancestry that causes us to huddle up to enjoy a meal and it lives on in every culture across our planet. In a world of digital distractions and crowded spaces, it’s nice to see a new phase of this age old gathering come to fruition.

I spoke with Haley Wood from the Gourmelt Food Truck the other day about a new venture they are spearheading in downtown Reno. Food Truck Fridays will start in April and continue through October on the first Friday of every month. Haley, and partner Jessie Watnes, have gathered up the top local food trucks to bring Reno a new gathering place for weekend eats.

With names like Gourmelt, Kenji’s, Dish Truck, Sauce Wagon, BoDawgs, Tahoe Creamery, Red Truck from Truckee and possibly more to come there will be plenty of choices for your friends and family to gather for a bite. The old Citifare Center on Fourth and Center will be home to the mobile eatery as well as a new police substation.

Local bands are scheduled to play and the Tumblebus will be on site to entertain the kiddos. A proposed beer garden from CommRow will handle the libations. It all adds up to a great venue for food and festivities. There is also talk of adding a craft booth type marketplace as well to bring non food businesses into the setting.

It’s nice to see the local entrepreneurial spirit gather in force to bring something new and exciting to Reno’s food scene. The businesses involved understand that working together to build the community makes for a much stronger future for all. This is a good sign for Reno foodies as it helps pave the way for smart partnerships instead of stiff competition. As I’ve said before, we are on the rise as a foodie community in Reno and these events will be a welcome addition.

One place to grab a sandwich, slider, rack of ribs or some tacos along with a cold beer in a venue built to enjoy with your friends and family. Doesn’t sound like a bad way to start a Friday night!
