Rounds Bakery is growing!!!

Last week, I got the chance to sit and chat with Zak from Rounds Bakery in his new location on Sierra St. and Court St. in downtown Reno. We talked about where his business has been, where it’s going and how he plans to be a part of the growing community.

It’s all in a name

Zak bought “The Bagel Stand” on Longley and McCarran a few years back. He changed the name to Rounds soon after to better reflect the coming additions to his products. The name Rounds was chosen to represent their signature product but still give them enough room to expand.

Zak confessed to me that he was a better business person than a baker. He’s found a talented team to create his perfect bagel and continue his journey into a full service bakeshop. All while creating a smart business model that works hard to serve the community.

The Bagels

Boiled and baked is the name of the game at Rounds. Just like they do it back east, the dough is made fresh every day and the bagels are formed, proofed, boiled, seasoned  and baked fresh to get that wonderful chewy but tender texture that a bagel should have. As you can imagine, they have every flavor you could want.

You can grab the bagels by the piece or by the dozens mixed and matched to your liking. If you’re looking for a meal in itself, they offer a good selection of sandwiches, spreads and breakfast combos to fill you up. Not happy with of the shelf spreads, they make all of those in house as well. Since no one wants a bagel alone, the offer a full menu of coffee and espresso drinks, smoothies and sodas.

My test for a bagel is always the traditional lox and smear with fresh tomato, capers and red onion. Theirs is uber yummy!

The Locations

The Sierra street shop opened early June at the corner of Court street, just next to Bumblebee Blooms. A nice open eatery with plenty of seating and a ton of outlets to plug in and work or play while you munch. Street parking right in front makes for a quick stop if you’re on the go.

Opening in August, the newest location is filling the whole left by Napa Sonoma on Moana inside Independence Square. This is the base of operations for Rounds and will offer fresh doughnuts and eventually a full service bakery.

Outside of their own stores, you can buy the bagels retail at Whole Foods and also in the cafes and shops of Peppermill and Atlantis. Zak has done a great job of getting his products into some great location so I expect they will add to that list soon.

The Future

Not one to think small, Zak plans to grow into more locations when the time is right. He talked about Sparks and Carson, as well as finding an outlet near his old hood of Longley and McCarran to serve his longstanding customers down south.

He’s happy to say that he is growing and hiring locals. It’s his way of supporting the community that supports him. He does his best to buy locally and when I asked him for a few words that described Rounds I got a quick response- “Really fresh and very local”
